I hate Windows Vista

I already hate Windows Vista, and I'm not even running it.

My mother, who lives in Missouri, has decided to finally plug into the Internet. She bought a laptop, which came with Microsoft's latest operating system, and ordered a DSL line from her local phone company. A relative managed to get the DSL modem and wireless hub configured yesterday after a bit of telephone consultation.

So today she's trying to browse the Internet, and she's having troubles.

Microsoft has made such a buggered-up mess of the IE7 user interface, which looks like something a teenager designed as a Winamp skin, that I can't even help her over the phone. And regardless of what Microsoft claims, Internet Explorer is a bugwad just asking to be infected by a virus.

Solution? Install Firefox.

She managed to find Google, run a search for Firefox, and click on all the right link to make the download happen. But Vista won't let her install it, popping up an alert that it's not digitally signed by Microsoft.

Signed by Microsoft?

As has been noted, that's not security. It's business terrorism -- frightening the user in order to protect Microsoft's business interests. This sort of nonsense doesn't happen on OSX and Linux, which simply require the user to confirm the installation with a password.

I swear, next time I get up there I'm going to wipe the hard drive and install Ubuntu Linux, Picasa, Abiword, Firefox and Thunderbird.

Update May 2008: I am closing comments on this thread because it's primarily attracting spammers. If anyone cares, I long ago migrated both my mother and my wife's mother (and my kids as well) to Ubuntu Linux, so I no longer have to worry about viruses and upgrades. It works, it's rock-solid stable, it's easy to use, it delivers much better performance than Vista, and they're all very happy with the universe of applications available to them.

Wow.....
just wow.
Microsoft has repeatedly tried to scam the customers that love them SO damn much and is a monopolistic software company. I was exited to upgrade to vista when i built my computer. I did, and was ANGRY. I currently run it on 4gb of ram and a Core 2 Extreme. It is NOT compatible with Need for speed MostWanted, my favorite game, and runs it slowly. For those of you not familiar with computers, my computer is TOP OF THE LINE. not trying to brag or anything. It also asks me EACH and every time if i mean to open, say, Firefox of Medal of Honor. OF F*CKING COURSE I DO! if i didnt, i woulden't of CLICKED ON IT. You however, are unfamiliar with Vista and have fallen under the trap. I bet you went to microsoft.com and read ALL about vista and how great it was, didn't you? I did and got all excited that i was upgrading. And, was DISAPPOINTED. Let me tell you something. Only IE will display most Microsoft sites. Talk about scamming. Sure they donate to charity! Everyone loves microsoft because they donated a million dollars! Well, to Microsoft it is just advertisement. Besides, a million dollars is like taking a penny out of a hundred dollars. It is cheap PR to them. Use vista and you will know what i mean. the only new thing is it looks nicer, and you can download themes online for XP that simulate just that. Plus, Windows Vista is note very compatible with, say, cameras, printers, and about half the peripherals that exist in this world.
Grow up. Just bcuz it's shiny does NOT mean it's a great product.

i have a copy of xp that i never installed and i want to get vista off so that i can install xp as SO MANY OF MY PROGRAMS AND HARDWARE won't run on vista...HOW do i do it...i tried to instal xp but it won't instal...do i have to take vista off first?
HELP!

Why this UAC and "microsoft signed" stuff? In unix based OS's an app can't write to files owned by the admin account without permission, e.g. OS X force you to enter your password if an app has to write to something outside your account, e.g., system files. This works perfectly, it's not annoying because most apps works perfectly fine without having to write to these files, and it protects important files from being altering without your knowledge. Unix is still safer, something Microsoft constantly denies.

Oh, for God's sake. What a load of old crap. You hate Vista and you've never used it?

Well I have used it and I think it sucks! I am a longtime user of the PC and was VERY satisfied with XP Pro. I use it to manage my business network of three computers and have NEVER had any issues with it. I now do video editing on a MacBook Pro and love it. I recently bought my wife a new laptop and it came preinstalled with Vista Home Premium and, oh where should I start?

First of all, it takes a month and a half to boot up and when you think it's up and try to boot an application, you notice that Vista hasn't finished yet. Trying to delete mail? Fuhgetaboutit. Won't happen. There's miles of dissatisfied people on MS's help forum asking why. They want you to download a different mail program. I actually tried that and get all the way to the end of the process only to find that it tells me the prescribed download is not right for my machine. I try to log on to the support site to find out WTF?, it asks me for the serial number of the OS, tells me where to find it, I put it in and what does it tell me? You don't have a legitimate copy of the OS.

I actually believe that Vista is Microsoft's pipeline into everyone's contact list to perpetuate SPAM forever. I'm sure there is some top secret plot to get into everyone's business!

I'm going back to XP!

Since I posted the original blog item in July, I've had plenty of chances to use Vista, and concluded that it's Microsoft's Edsel.

As a result, I've done the following:

  • Rescued my elderly mother's Toshiba from Vista hell by installing Linux. She bought a very nice dual-core laptop for $400 after rebate, only to find that it was unusable with Vista Home Basic because it "only" had half a gig of RAM. An Ubuntu disk fixed that problem, and it's now quick as a bunny.
  • Migrated my mother-in-law to Linux. The hard drive on her desktop died, and lacking an XP install disk, there was no option but to install Ubuntu Linux. It does everything she wants, and we have no worries about viruses.
  • Installed Linux on my daughter's Acer Aspire 3680. It came with Vista, which curiously runs faster than on my mother's Toshiba despite the Acer only having a single-core Celeron. However, Vista is still intolerably slow, so I put Linux on a partition. The hard part was getting wireless networking going; the Acer's Atheros wi-fi chipset isn't supported. A Trendnet 802.11G card, $2.99 after rebate from CompUSA, fixed that, so she's now online.

For years I've been thinking about migrating my family to Linux, and there's always been some frustrating shortcoming that's held me back.

But Linux has turned a corner. Ubuntu is superb and friendly.

It's lightning-fast and runs the essentials: Skype, instant messaging on all the various services, Picasa, Google Earth, Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org and a big collection of games.

iTunes is the only missing element, so I'm introducing my daughter to Amazon.com's DRM-free download service.

Vista sucks. Has anyone tried to work with a disc drive and can't find a way
to erase a file?

Well it took two weeks and a bottle of rum, but the travesty known as Vista is gone from my HP Pavillion. Like cancer, it just kept coming back no matter how many times I tried to erase it. Here's how to change the factory pre-load to XP on a newer HP.
Start the computer and hit F10 before Vista loads. In set-up, go to "Advanced". A few lines down you'll see "Onboard Pata/Sata adapters". Hit enter and you'll have 3 or more choices: Sata, Pata, Both. Choose both. On the next line down for "Sata Mode", You again have 3 options: Raid, IDE or ACPI. Choose IDE.
Now click over to "Boot" and change all the boot priorities to CD-Rom. Hit enter. Do as the prompt says for a few screens and it will ask you if you want to format the C and/or D partition. Be brave...do the format.
It will ask you to put a disc in the CD drive, but XP will not fully load with this configuration.
Re-start-F10-"Advanced", key back down to "Onboard Pata/Sata adapters" and change this to "Sata". Leave the next line down as "IDE". Follow the prompt and load up a copy of Windows XP.
Billy gates only left one booby trap. After removing the evil Vista and installing XP, your internet might not work. This is because the ethernet port on the mother board is crap and has a weak driver that will not accept XP OS. Do not try to fix it. Like Vista, it is beyond hope. Buy a 12 dollar Belkin Ethernet card and software, install it, pour a drink and surf the net.
This worked for me. I hope it will help liberate more of you from Vista-tosis Titanicus.

What was Microsoft thinking?? I tryed vista at work when it first came out thinking I would love it. I am an XP power user and figured I should get familure with it. Well after using it for 20 Minues and trying to use it as fast or faster as XP I gave up. All the menus and things are not each to get to anymore. You have to click multiple times plus you have to answer yes so many times because it doesn't eblieve you just clicked on something..They keep talking about security. If security is like this in the future we are all doomed! 10 minutes to start a program, 10 minutes to login because you have to fill out 100 character password with upper and lower plus 30 special characters... I mean when does this stop? Security shouldn't make things harder and if it does I say its tiome to go back to the drawing boards. I just tryed to help someone with Vista and the damn wireless network wouldn't work. It made me so made I did a seach in google and found this page. It made me feel so much better that othes hate Vista as much as I do!! Can't it just go away? I'm a support tech and don't want to help people with that operating system as its sooo irritating. I want to pull out my shotgun and shot it!

a new OS is supposed to make the computer you allready have run better, not worse.
why do i have to buy a new computer to run a new OS?
when winME came out it was a vast improvement over win98. AND i didn't have to buy a new computer.
it was an upgrade. winME ran so well, that i kept using it untill i had no choice but to upgrade. win xp runs very well concidering it is a resource hog.
i support torrents, and downloading pirate copies of windows. why because Bitch Gates.. i mean bill gates is the richest man on earth, and he is a computer terrorist. microsoft supports virus infection, and spyware. why else can't they get rid of and protect your computer from viruses and spyware. i'll NEVER GIVE THAT BITCH ANOTHER DOLLAR OF MY MONEY. they want to control EVERY aspect of your internet experience.

Problem: Just bought a new Laptop with Vista. I've had some experience with Vista on a couple of machines but have never tried working with it on a daily basis. The security prompts were driving me crazy. Within 24 hours Internet Explorer stopped working. Figured out how to fix the problem but Vista security would not let me disable an option in Internet Explorer. My account was listed as an administrative account, it really isn't. Had to figure out how to enable the hidden administrative account to fix the problem. I spent more time trying to circumvent Vista security then actually fixing the problem. Arrrrgh..... Bottom line is, I don't need an expensive operating system thats going to be fighting me every step of the way.

Solution: I blew away Vista and installed Ubuntu Linux. I'm stunned at how easy and fun Ubuntu is. Openoffice is completely compatible with all my MS office documents, spreadsheets and powerpoints. Evolution is a perfect replacement for Outlook. Forget Internet Explorer, Firefox works way better for me. The beryl interface blows away the Vista interface. I have Windows Xp running under virtualbox for the few MS apps I haven't found replacements for, yet :) Take my advice, dump Vista and switch to Ubuntu, its a breath of fresh air. Now if only we can get the Computer manufacturers to sell computers without insisting on selling me Vista.

Cheers,
Joost

I bought a new HP notebook that came with Vista Home premium installed - had to make my own system backup on DVD. First problem - struggled with BSOD, HP support & wasted hours creating a Vista reinstall disk that should have been provided. MS don't even trust their paying customers.
Won't instal a networked HP printer (Vista certified) - missing core component.
Struggled for days to get an external usb drive to work - manual install
Bluetooth mouse keeps being dropped after reboot.
And on and on. I'm worn down. Everything is a struggle. Like many of you, I have expensive paid-for software that won't run on Vista, so I got to keep my old XP machine for ever.
I hate Vista!

At the moment I am typing this on my old toshiba laptop, because it runs 100 times better than the brand spankin' new toshiba I just bought 2 months ago with Vista installed...........what does that tell you? I bought a new computer because I needed somthing more powerful to get my work done, not to sit on the damn thing trying to fix errors, incompatibility problems, and try and find updates for Vista so that I could actually get some work done. I bought a new computer to be more productive! Unfortunately I can't return the damn thing because there is a 14 day return policy, and if there wasn't I would surely trade it in for a Mac. I was contemplating buying a Mac, but the price was a little high, so I decided to stick with Toshiba because I've never had a problem with my old one, just needed a better video card and such, but nooooooooo, Vista has to cost me not only the $800 for my new computer, but loss of productivity to boot. Well Mr Gates, you just lost a customer.

Hey I know that sounds weird but I thought I try. Would you or could you give the Vista to me after that experience? I know I know its not nice asking for a thing like thtat out of nowhere but I thought I try. :] Thanks

I just bought a new laptop for home and was forced to get Vista in the process (OEM installed; no choice). I don't hate Vista. I loathe, despise and DETEST Vista. I have never encountered an O/S that was so patronizing and user unfriendly. I am desperately seeking a way to convert back to XP from Vista Home. Can anyone save me?

Was a PC guy for many years. Actually used to talk crap about Apple. Upgraded to Vista on a really sweet machine. Hate it. Gave two Microsoft desktop away, and two Microsoft laptops away. Got a Mac Pro.

Sorry Apple I ever talked smack. I paid a lot of money for this thing but would gladly pay twice the amount I paid for it. It is the best Computer I have ever had. And some would call me a computer geek. Everything works. my printer, my keyboard, even my Vizio 52 inch LCD that it is hooked up to. In fact I have not hand anything not work yet, and all my stuff was originally for Microsoft operating systems.

Buy a Mac if you still need to run Microsoft stuff get Parallels and install xp on it. Two computers for the price of one. XP will run twice as fast on a Mac as it does on a Windows based machine. Don't believe me read PC World Dec or Jan issue (not sure which one). As far as vista well..... Just look at Apple stock. Gotta tell you something. Apple is tearing Microsoft up.

Um, did you try installing Safari?

If you loved her wouldn't you install Safari, Steve?

;-)

Robb

I do have Safari on my Mac, of course, and it's installed on the XP machine at home as well, but I don't use it in either case. Firefox has too many advantages. The extensions are great. And my fingers are already Firefox-trained. I fire up Safari only occasionally to check Web page designs.

On our Linux systems, Safari isn't available. Safari is derived from the Linux KHTML toolkit and I could be using Konqueror, but I actually don't.

Of course, the original problem wasn't with the Web browser but with Vista itself, which is a resource-sucking monster.

I have had nothing but trouble with this version of Windows. Installing software, running too slow, not responding, etc. and on and on and on....it never stops!!!! Can I go back to Windows XP or am I stuck with this monster?

Vista has so many bugs, because it's an unfinished product,
Vista release was postponed so many times that they had to release it without being completely finished. A company without any serious competition can do that. Until Microsoft gets any serious competition, we'll have to serve has ginnea pigs to test
their unfinished products.

^Did buy new laptops........ with Vista, never do that!
Indeed unfinished.

I think that your words are the narrow minded ones. My first point: BOTH Operating Systems? Please tell me you know that there are more than two. Secondly, Vista is a resource hog, the new aero look especially. Thirdly: Vista as a whole has caused may poeple to simply downgrade(My old high school for example) back to XP. Therefore it is not "pretty good" you are settling for what they will feed you. Finally: You should not settle for needing the right hardware; The operating system should be adaptable and portable to different hardware and its specifications. Of the top 500 supercomputers in the world over 85% use Linux because it could handle never being rebooted without a bloated registry. While you use Mac I write to you from Fedora 8 Linux, both are good operating systems in that they are fast, and user friendly and they make vista look like a slug in comparison. One however is not limited to apple hardware.
Wake up, windows shot a blank with Vista. The writer of this article is not alone. In fact, I think it is your mindset that is in the minority here. I applaud you for not using Vista. I shame you for defending it.

I bought a laptop and Vista home was on it. I hate this thing already I am trying to download flash players and shockwave player and it tells me I dont have persmission for pete's sake this is my computer and i want to install this stuff, It wont let me install anything how do i get around this garbage. Anyway to wipe this clean and install windows XP professional ? Will it screw anything up ?

One more Vista Hater here. I also have MAC and Linux. I like XP. I like things that work. I work with vista everyday and it doesn't work. Always trying to "help" you by slowing you down to smell all those pretty (GUI) flowers. I have to deal with hardware and software configuration all day long and I'd have to say that with a Vista machine, there's about a 50% chance that what ever I'm trying to do will not work for inexplicable reasons. Move over to an XP machine.... no problem 95% of the time. Awful product.

well, anyone think we should sue? I got game mouse vista killed, oh an with
the latest defender now my usb ports not so operational. Oh and the
screaming sound from the bowls of my sony vaio, which could
only be cured by yanking the d...... battery our. 2 times an counting.
Oh , i could say some really techy crap, i could tell you to shutoff
the permissions mommy moniter but what ever. No what i would
like to say is in the last 2.5 mons. I have 7200 major errors on my
admin. logs. and along with my usual hate mail to mickysoft i sent
every damn error log. thank god the dsl held. lol

god Vista's stupid... it's all nice and shiny on the outside... but i bet it's programming it's a real horror story (i'm so glad i'm not a programmer, cause Vista would probably scare the crap out of me)... ok now lets be serious for a sec... i tried recently Vista X64 SP1 and i was lucky to find the all the drivers for my hardware... but here's the funny thing... although the drivers were Vista x64 certified, after installing my Lan driver, the computer just froze each time it tryed connecting to the internet... i didn't even had to start firefox or IE7... it just froze by it self... not even the mouse cursor wouldn't move... i rebooted in safe mode and it worked fine... i tried unpluging the internet and started normaly... and surprise surprise... all was good... no problems... pluged the cable back... and ... nothing... no movement... no reaction... not even the damn BSOD didn't apear... so what's the conclusion... although i have a good computer... i had all the drivers... the damn thing still didn't work... Vista is just to F***-ing incompatible with EVERYTHING. something tells me that in max 2 years microsoft will launch a brand new Windows to replace this sinking "Windows Titanic!" ,( to quote the guy 2 posts above.... )

I finally got around to upgrading my old XP laptop with the IE7 version after FaceBook gave me areminder when I logged in the my IE needed to be upgraded. New new browser constantly locks up on me and has to send the dreaded "error report" off to Microsoft. Does Microsoft actually do anything with that error report or does it just go into their trash can?

Well, I get paid for maintaining Windows networks. I'm a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and a Cisco Network Associate. I also run a business writing and selling software to help others mange Windows environments. I try to keep up with what MS is up to. Long story short, Vista didn't really grab me from the beginning BUT I knew I would have to bite the bullet and get to know it if I was going to make compatible software and manage it on networks. So, I got a new HP laptop with Vista... I persisted for 2 months. There may be an argument for installing it on home machines... I can't think of one, but on corporate networks my advice is and will continue to be (even after SP1) STAY AWAY. It might be pretty (or pretty bl##dy ugly) but the horrendous incompatibilities with XP are unforgivable. It's incredibly arrogant! It's slower to use, not just the performance but the work flow, if that's what you call it in an OS AND why should I have to tell it I want to do something 4 times to do it... wasn't the first good enough? It's like using nag-ware that you pay for! XP had some performance issues and it's looks could have been tweaked but NO Microsoft had to make "BLACK MAC"... a broken version of course! Ultimately most people are going to turn off the "security" features or ignore them, because of repetition, incompatibilities, whatever. After that it may very well be less secure that XP. Ahhhhhgggg! I felt like I needed to saved form it! HEEEEELLLLPPPP! So, I uninstalled it and decided I would boycott the OS whenever possible.

From a personal perspective I hate it because it stinks of Microsoft's greed culture. I got into Information Technology because of it's ability to automate, enhance, produce, innovate etc. As far as I can Microsoft make decisions solely on how many bucks they are gonna get and if that means adding a feature they add it.... and if it means screwing their clients they do that too, it's business buddy. Yeah, I know that's the way the share market works but I still think producing a product for your client (as opposed to your share holders) is more moral and leads to a better, happier and more productive society. "Society" you say "Don't you know it's all about me and my new Ferraris, Ferraris, Ferraris, Ferraris, Ferraris, Ferraris! " shouts Steven Anthony Ballmer. What happened to the days when companies tried to produce a product for the consumer. To me Vista is a touchstone for everything that is wrong with the world today, pigs at the trough, ship going down, heads in the sand, glossy exterior with a sting in the tail.

I think Vista is produced for Microsoft no one else and that's why I hate it!

Are you sure you wish to do this? Are you absolutely positive?Really?I don't believe you. You're just joking! This isn't what I think you want to do.Is it?I don't know.Absolutely really positive you want to do this?Oh,okay go on then. But don't blame me if you break something!
All this from wanting to turn off tap to click on the trackpad on my friends new laptop!

If I could afford it I would get a mac.As it is,I am staying with XP.My friend is in the process of reinstalling it.

I have been using windows since windows95 and always had mixed feelings. One the one hand I thought having the same OS on every machine was a good thing, on the other hand I always found windows OS pretty badly designed and full of bugs. I have thought about switching to Mac more and more over the years but never did, until vista came out that is.
I never switched to Mac because I was always afraid to lose productivity. But, thanks to vista this fear has disappeared, nothing can be worse than vista, nothing. Windows XP wasn't that bad and I chickened out one more time buying a pc with vista a few months ago. I was hoping vista was just an upgrade of XP. But, I quickly realize that vista was the end of the windows OS road for me. Vista is the biggest piece of crap ever produced by windows which is in itself an achievement!! They basically took the same things they had with XP and superimposed tons of shit on it. Everything is so deeply buried under that pile of excrements that it is impossible to work for me. I experienced tons of similar problems than other users regarding installation of new softwares, plus why is that dumb OS keep asking me a 100 times a day about registering mcafee and other softwares I don't want. There is not even an option to ask them to stop popping-up and bothering me!! So, they keep appearing and asking me again and again the same thing. I tried to go and kill the mcafee folder just to see vista denying me the right to get rid of that software!!! Regarding MS office (i used word, excel and powerpoint), it is the biggest joke of all. They changed every button and menus so that people like me that were quite efficient with their programs are back to square one. It takes me forever to do basic things which is of course unacceptable. By the way, this is the definite incentive for me to switch to mac, why stay with something crappy like windows and relearn everything instead of going to something new and better?? Here, just got the latest pop-up asking me about registering, once again...I can't stand it anymore, tomorrow I go buy a mac. Thank you windows for making the switch easy for me!!

I hate Vista. It looks like a Mac copy. It runs slow like a bloated pig.
If I wanted a Mac, I would have bought one. Vista is just another Windows ME. Don't buy it. Use Windows 2000, XP or Windows 98 SE.
Vista is cursed.

Vista SUCKS!! the 1 GB Ram was more than enough for the previous version, now thanks to Vista my Laptop crashes every 2 days, hey Gates did you get more cash from PC makers for doing this or you just want to screw users for FUN? And I'm not even talking about the new menu's, what kind of an idiot decided to make things more complicated for users? is it because you got tired of being dominant market player and want to give more chances for other software companies?? Come on guys, WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS, I REALLY DON'T GET IT SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN ME.

First you need to boot the computer from the CD-ROM (XP CD ROM) and then tell the setup to format the hard drive (this will erase ALL in the hard drive, so you need to have backups of your information) and then you just follow XP setup!

I'm always glad to help anyone to get rid of Vista! :P

I hate Vista and Internet explorer. It is slow and always freezes. My XP never performed this badly. If I owned stock in Microsoft, I would sell it. My next computer is definatly going to be a Mac.

Right,Vista has many problems.it is so bad

Vista does suck in every way shape and form. For those that like it must love the classic freezes, bloatware, crashes, blue screens of death, viruses, adware, spyware, instuders, anti virus costs, microsoft lockdown's agaisnt other programs that are better than microsofts and unreliability that come with the windows experience. For god's sake wake up and smell the Apple. Get a MAC with OS X or Linux. Taste the freedom, and it just works.

Look, I'm both a Linux and Windows user, for most of my work I use Ubuntu 8.04, and I love it, its been quite hard to configure it but in the end, it is worth the effort. Nevertheless, I use Vista to run most of my school software, since there are no decent opensource CAD/CAM, circuit analysis, PCB design and graphic design alternatives, I have to dual-boot. When I started using Vista I was quite unhappy, tried to install XP but my new Toshiba Satellite wouldn't let me since most drivers do not exist for XP so I decided to give Vista a chance. This far I must say I've learned to like it, Vista has a lot of downfalls, the nanny is awful and I'm still trying to deactivate it, the resource consumption is basically: stupid. Ubuntu does more aesthetic things with less resources. However, Microsoft gave a step forward on the document organization and certainly did great with the network manager. Of course Vista is nowhere near Windows 2000, which rocked, however it is not that bad, you just have to dare to try something new in a Microsoft environment (the same way you have to dare to try something new when using Linux). Believe me, if you are patient enough you'll realize Vista is actually a 'good' OS, stop criticizing it if you haven't tried to understand that Microsoft at last dared to change their awful software, just look at MS Office 07, or OneCare, they are some of the best alternatives ever, and some of the best software ever produced by Microsoft. Stop hating products just because they're Microsoft's, try to use them before attacking them, thats how software evolves, or was Ubuntu's first version perfect?
